Sunniest Walks is run by AFAutomations (Alex Fielder). This page says what the site does with information about you. Last updated 2026-10-19.
What stays on your device
Nothing, unless you say yes. After your first route the site asks "Remember my places on this device?"
- Remember keeps your start, end, route preference and detour setting in your browser's local storage. It also keeps the map data for that walk in the browser's cache, so it works offline. None of it is sent to us.
- No thanks is remembered only until you close the tab, so the site doesn't ask again on every route. Nothing outlives the tab.
- Forget my places, at the foot of the main page, deletes both at once.
The site sets no cookies.
Searching for places
When you type a place or postcode, our server looks it up for you with postcodes.io (postcodes) or Nominatim (OpenStreetMap's search). Those services see our server's address, never yours. We don't keep your searches; results are cached for a day without any link to you.
Planning a walk
To work out the shade, our server receives your start and end points and downloads the surrounding area's map and LiDAR data. The area is cached so the next walk there is quick. The cache records which areas were built, not who asked for them. Our web server logs requests (address, time, page) for security and troubleshooting, and we delete those logs routinely.
Using "My location"
Your browser asks before sharing your location. The site uses it only to place pin A, the same as tapping the map.
Visitor statistics
We count visits with Umami, which we host ourselves at px.afautomations.co.uk. Umami sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device and doesn't follow you to other sites. It honours your browser's Do Not Track setting. We also count a few anonymous events: a route planned, the shady mode, the 3D view, places remembered, and the app installed.
Errors
If the page hits an error, it sends the error message and the page address to our server so we can fix it. It sends nothing about you.
Your rights and contact
Under UK data protection law you can ask what we hold about you and ask us to delete it. Because the site doesn't identify you, there is usually nothing to find. Contact us through afautomations.co.uk. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
